Benefits of iodine

If you have your vacation by the sea, remember that here the air is healthy for your health. It contains iodine, which is necessary for human body. Lack of iodine can cause fatigue, decreased performance, increased nervousness and so on. Even your intellectual abilities can be influenced.

Experts say that when breathing sea air, we renew reserves of iodine in our body. However, eating food that contains iodine is even more important. The best sources of iodine are seafood, such as fish, crustaceans, mollusks, sea cabbage and salt with iodine. Little iodine is found in eggs, meat, milk and cereals. Sea cabbage is especially useful for those who don’t want or cannot use salt with iodine. Besides, sea cabbage reduces cholesterol, improves digestive tract and stimulates cardiovascular system.

A person should get about 150 micrograms of iodine per day. The lack of it can cause serious illnesses related to thyroid gland. It can also cause development of mental and physical disorders. Doctors emphasize that it’s is very important to get sufficient amount of iodine during pregnancy and during lactation as it affects child’s mental abilities. If pregnant women doesn’t get enough of iodine, the embryo gets too little thyroid hormone which is needed for brain formation. This increases a risk of miscarriage or premature birth.
