Millions of people all around the world suffer from snoring. It is not only annoying but also a risk to your health as it is one of the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea.

What causes snoring?

When we are sleeping, our upper airway muscles shrink and normal breathing is disrupted. Due to increased pressure and changes in inspiratory flow rate, soft parts of the mouth (soft palate and uvula) vibrate. This results typical snoring sound.

Snoring depends on age and gender. Elderly people, especially men snore more often. The most common reasons of snoring are these: overweight, drinking alcohol before going to bed, tobacco, sleeping pills, sleeping on your back, different types of fatigue, crooked nose and so on.

Only doctor can tell exact reasons of snoring. You may need to make some exams for that. Doctor chooses the right treatment according to individual patients’ needs and medical condition. Lately, patients are offered to be treated using positive airway pressure therapy. In some cases, surgical treatment is required.
