When vitamins become a poison

There is no secret that before buying any kind of vitamins we don’t bother to visit our family doctor and get his advice. We simply go to the pharmacy and, according to the ads we have seen or read earlier, buy one way after another. Specialists warn – vitamins can also become a poison!

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is recommended for people whose immune system is decreased (smokers, pregnant women and others). It is true that Vitamin C also helps to overcome various infections and fatigue, helps to recover after intensive mental work hours. However, balanced diet should give you recommended Vitamin C dose – various fruits and vegetables are rich in this vitamin. For example, even one portion of potatoes will give you a daily dose of Vitamin C (100 mg). So, if you also use Vitamin C supplements, you can simply lead your body to overdosing. Vitamin C overdose (more than 2000 mg a day) can cause diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, can promote kidney stone formation, so be aware.

Glucosamine

Food supplements with glucosamine are used for prevention of various joint diseases and their symptoms. Glucosamine is extracted from marine shells and marine products, so people who are allergic to these additives shouldn’t use it because glucosamine can cause gastrointestinal problems, diarrhea, headache and rash. In addition, this material increases the sugar levels in human’s blood, so this supplement is not recommended for people suffering from diabetes.

Potassium

Potassium regulates fluid balance in the body. It’s necessary for human’s heart, muscle and nervous systems and their normal work. When our body starts lacking of potassium, blood pressure level increases what may lead us to heart failure or muscular weakness. However, the overdose of this supplement is dangerous because it can cause arrhythmia. By the way, the less fluid in the body, the less potassium it needs. There is such story about a guy who spent 8 hours in the gym. Naturally, after so many hours of intense physical activity, the body was dehydrated. After exercising man decided to eat bananas that are high in carbohydrates. However, bananas are also rich in potassium, which finally killed the athlete.
